Waterpump Service: Alpha Sterndrives

The Waterpump Impeller located in your sterndrive lower unit is responsible for pumping the lakewater through your engine to keep it cool. As the impeller ages, it stops providing enough water to maintain the correct water temp in the engine. Once this happens, the engine will over heat and damage may occur.

  • Remove prop and check for fish line
  • Drain gear lube and remove lower unit
  • Replace impeller and required gaskets/seals (additional charges if any parts outside of normal service are required)
  • Reinstall lower unit, pressure test and refill with new gear lube
  • Reinstall prop
  • Test run to check for waterpump operation and proper shifting
  • Top off gear lube bottle if equipped

Depending on type of waterpump impeller, your service interval may be from 2 to 3 years regardless of engine hours. If you are unsure of your service interval, please call to find out yours.
